AEI provided Phase 1 and 2 Design Services for this 5.2-mile widening in Daviess County, Kentucky. The goal of this state-funded project is to widen an approximately 5.2-mile stretch of KY 54 from the US 60 Bypass that connects Owensboro to Whitesville, Kentucky. The KY 54/US 60 Interchange is congested during peak traffic periods. Growth along the corridor is rapidly increasing and is now the busiest road in District 2. There are also collision patterns at intersections with KY 54 and a high CRF (Critical Rate Factor) on the more developed section of KY 54. The purpose of the project is to address the congestion of KY 54 during peak periods and to improve safety, mobility, and connectivity between Owensboro and Whitesville. AEI recently completed Phase I design and has begun Phase II. We provided the following services for KYTC District 2:
• AEI provided conventional surveying to map the corridor and also Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) to map underground utilities that affect design decisions.
• AEI is providing all related structural design for bridges and culvert impacts.
• AEI is providing roadway/corridor planning and design elements including study of rural and urban templates.
• AEI was also charged with providing bikeway considerations since Daviess County has several multi-use trails and bike path corridors. Part of the Phase I Preliminary Engineering scope was to evaluate and assess overall bike accessibility throughout the corridor.
• Typical section selection was a critical item. The AEI team provided evaluation of 5- lane to 3-lane transitioning and impacts to access management, drainage, utilities, and existing signage.
• A key part of the AEI scope is to provide public involvement duties to support KYTC. The impacts of this project require a comprehensive and thoughtful approach to keeping the public is well informed and presenting the project in the best light possible.
